A New Hen House
« on: January 17, 2010, 12:24 »
Hello and good morning to everyone...

I would like to get 3 hens to supply my family with fun, knowledge of hens and of course eggs.

I have an idea of where to get my hens, but I am stuck on what house to get.

Some peoplehave suggested a rabbit hutch, but personally that is just naughty as it would be like me living in a dog kennel.

Now I have seen many houses and cannot choose. I have seen a lovely one called a Cocoon ? which a height up house with run and fence, but I am worried about foxes getting under.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Chicken-Coop-Poultry-Rabbit-Cat-House-Run-CC047_W0QQitemZ290392099352QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Pet_Supplies_Poultry?hash=item439cb7ca18

Has anyone got any ideas or links or even photos of suggested Hen houses.

I am going nuts in trying to decide.

Thanks

:)

Thanks

Looks really nice!  But might want to extend the size of the run?  It probably is big enough for 3, but they'd do better with more space, unless you intend to let them free range?

Ours is a home made jobby.  Patches of grass are now a distant memory!  Didn't last 5 minutes.

The coop on your link is quite small for 3 hens 6' long x 3' 6" high, also look at the negative feedback comments.  Personally I think the home build is the better route.

Here is mine on a snowy day 6'6" High x 15' long by 12' wide

You are wasting your money buying these ebay imported houses. They are not weather proof and will not last through a winter, they drop to bits. I bought a few of these for trios of tiny bantams, they are not big enough for anything else. Mine are kept undercover for the winter, wouldnt leave my banties outside in one of these.
You would be better off buying a small shed and converting it for your chickens.

There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of memory, the other two I forget.

Apologises, but I seemed to have mis-placed my previous post.

I need a hen house for approx 3 girls, maybe four.

I unfortunately don't have time to build one, so was looking to all those experienced keepers to assist / point me in the right direction for a new house.

I came across this link on the site and assume they should be okay, although some people have said "don't buy" will fall apart.

I live in the Bristol area.

My eventual plot will be approx 6ft x 6ft, but will let the girls free range.

Thanks

 :)

We have 3 chickens and this is our set-up.
The ark was bought and the run and coop stand was made by my husband.

I like the look of their houses for waterfowl and may get one for the goslings when they come  :D

Thanks Beano.

Thats alot of money.

May have to look on Freecycle or Trade-it.

As this is my first, I want to keep costs to a minimum until I am about 1 year in.
