Jam jars
« on: July 02, 2008, 21:27 »
Have just started to dry off my shallots  - I have about 200 from 20 sets!!!  Not bad for my first try...  I'd like to pickle them and have collected a few jam jars but really not enough!  Does anyone know the best place to buy cheap jam jars - or even better, where you can get them free?

It's my first year with this allotment and now I've started harvesting and all the hard work is paying off I'm totally hooked

Went to an auction one time and came away with 23 dozen bottling jars for a pound equivalent - no one else was interested. Knew I should have bid 50p.

Sarsons pickling vinegar jars are big and double as pickling jars.  Last year at pickling time I got three for two

The Tesco preserve jars were rubbish and leaked  :(  so avoid those. I ended up getting some from Lakeland.  I think some folks buy cheapo jam just for the jars  :D

If I recall correctly, you need to be a little careful with the type of lids where you're using vinegar as a base in chutneys or pickling.  metal lids will corrode if exposed.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
