chickens on the same ground
« on: July 28, 2009, 23:20 »
Ive been wondering about chooks and worms, girls will get done hopefully  sunday.   Thing is my chooks are kept on the same ground, there house is on the concrete patio and then they have a big grassed area, they are let out onto the big garden 1 to 3 times a week but the rest of the time they are in their garden.   I regliously poo pick every nite and the grass gets mowed  also, do you think with me maintaing the grass this way it will cut down the chance of worms considering they are on it all the time.    Nickyx

How big is their grassed area nicky? I don't poo pick my grass (children are grown up and left our nest - yipee ) The rain washes it into the ground as a natural fertilizer (lawn/clover area never looked so good). The larger the area the healthier the ground will be and as you've still got grass it must be largish, but chicks being chicks will eat slugs n snails so like dogs and hedgehogs etc run the risk of getting lung worm. I worm mine twice a year (jan and july), others do it 3 times and some only when they have symptoms of worms. Hope this is of some help to you, joyxx
Staffies are softer than you think.

Poo picking will definitely decrease the risk of building up worm eggs in the area !

although mine free range over our garden (1/2 acre) plus an enormous field and a bridleway so not really an option for me - perhaps I ought to invest in those chicken nappies

Just make sure you worm your chook regularly with Flubenvet if they are on the same ground. :)
