Fruit trees
« on: October 12, 2023, 10:08 »
I've just received the latest news letter, it was interesting reading as usual

I read about fruit trees in pots

I have blueberry, lemon, lime, fig trees in pots (and of course the wife has her lilies in pots, they stay out, just cut back the stalks and shred them for the hot bin

The blue berries I leave out (but cover with a fleece, they never give as much fruit as the sellers always portray),

The lemon, lime and fig trees I bring into my conservatory, they get minimum water, no feed, there is no heating in my conservatory, I turn the radiators off

The lemon tree seems to give fruit year round, regardless of the weather

The lime tree has never given fruit, it gets watered, fed the same as the lemon tree, if it does fruit next year, it's off to the bin (its the same age as the lemon tree, about 4-5 years old, so any suggestions are appreciated

The fig trees are new this year, so I have no idea when they will bear fruit (one is a 'little miss figgy' a dwarf tree)

Never even tried growing them, so any tips/tricks are appreciated, as usual

My tomato's got off to a slow start, but even now I am still picking them, they seem a lot sweeter this year

It's all about the journey, not the destination

Hi Pepsi - I was thinking of trying some blueberries and cranberries in pots on the plot next year, apart from the ericaceous compost, are the blueberries much trouble regarding pests etc? Do you have to cover them against birds at all?

Never had problems with birds,or bugs but grandkids, as soon as they get fat (the blueberries, not the grandkids) they pinch them
If I dont bring them in, I cover them with a double fleece, they are about 3 years old now
The pink blueberry plant seems to have died off, but that was in the garden, but the others fared well, I cover them with a double fleece as well, but I have to make sure its well pegged down, the wind rips the fleece to pieces

Just dont use too much fleece on the kids  ;)

Put down some good fertiliser in the spring, gives em a good start

I'll be using the compost from my hotbin

I received my new fig tree yesterday, after 3 days stuck with a courier, it arrived in better condition than I expected, but its tiny

Yes I know when a seller gives it to a courier they lose all control over it

Tomato plants I ordered we overturned, dried out and had virtually no soil left in the pots

At least I got 3 refunds for them

I swore I would never buy online after them, the fig tree surprised me (someone put a bit of thought when they packed it)

I cant see getting any fruit from it next year or the year after

Its small enough to live on the window sill, so that will it will be spending the winter
