A question about tomatoes.
« on: October 07, 2023, 11:55 »
Hello everyone,  does removing ripe tomatoes from the plant encourage green tom's to ripen faster ?  Or is this wishfull thinking about a natural process

I have searched a well known etc etc and all that they come up with is how to ripen tomatoes.

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

The ripe left fruit around them on the plants, will give off ethene and help the green ones to ripen.
If it gets too cold to leave them outside, putting the green and ripe ones together on a tray, does the same thing.
If you would rather have ripening spread over time, then obviously separate them to slow down ripening.

I noticed a bit of blight on one plant and stripped all the other plants of anything green and put them on a window cill where they have been turning red.  The plants have now all succumbed and will be removed this weekend.   They're not very tasty and I've been using them up in recipes this week so 'bolster' tins of tomatoes.

I'm still picking my tomato's, they are orange, I dont expect them to turn red, still quite a few green ones on there

But I expect the frost will put paid to them, but they will get used in something

A couple have split, the birds get them

My tomato's didnt get very tall this year, but very bushy

I think it was a good year for them
It's all about the journey, not the destination
