Its the first day of Spring to-day    Has anyone started to chit their Sweetcorn yet ?

  way too early for sweetcorn!  At least another 6 or more weeks to go for me

dont get sucked in by the mild temps were having and the excitement of spring.last year loads of people had a bad harvest of corn (me not included) due to early sowing and planting ,then our old friend jack frost danced his icy tune.try to be patient.

If you know nothing about geography, all you really need to know is that Britanny is more south that the most southerly bit of south England.

Think Channel Isles and you may get a better idea.

i do no abit about geography . do they never get a frost  early spring.?all im saying is be a bit carefull planting out early.

Another month until I sow mine in paper pots (will probably pre-chit having had a bad batch of Swift last year.)

This is another tender summer crop which is not only easily killed by frost but will sulk for weeks if it's not warm enough for them and they don't seem to completely recover even when the temperatures do improve!

Maybe - but he's not talking about planting them out yet, only chitting them. I'll be sowing in about 3 weeks time, I reckon down there they could well get away with being those few weeks ahead of me.

I got as far as taking out the sweetcorn seeds and counting them 
I reckon I'll sow them a week into April like last year, they were a nice size when planting out.

Not sure how many to do though. Last year i sowed 27 sweetcorn, 100% germination, but it turned out not to be enough, the cobs weren't huge... (golden bantam) Is 60 sweetcorn plants excessive? In two sowing of 30?

And then the conundrum of which ones to grow... have a pack of Golden Bantam, Double Standard Bicolor from realseeds, and Incredible F1. I know i have to pick one... oh decisions...
Has anyone had experience of the last two?

 Thanks guys. Yes, its only chitting at the moment as I still have the paper pots to make all 70 of them.
  I might be in Brittany but there was a pig**** hard frost this morning at 7.00am (6.00am your time).

I grew Incredible F1 last year and it was very good. Only grows about 3 feet high and has a couple of cobs per plant. Very sweet and lovely with a salad. That was my first time with sweetcorn but I`ll be doing more of the same this tear>

Ok, if you're growing 70 Potiron, i'll stick to my plans of about 60 then... thats a lot of paper pots...
