Dock
« on: November 13, 2007, 18:40 »
Down on the plot the other day soing some more clearing, and dug up a dock.  No word of a lie, the root was 2/3 the length of my fork!!! If only the carrots grew  like that!  I have never seen such an enormous plant, it just shows how neglected the place is!

I wish I had my camera with me for proof, but alas, I'm not that organised!
On the very steep learning curve of organic veg growing!!!!

When I moved here I found a few dock plants like BHC has. From a small cap, I poured several drops of undiluted Roundup on the freshly cut stump and haven't seen them since. Not something I recommend with all weeds, just the mega rooting ones.

A dochan that size will have been producing seed for years hence.  Expect a nice crop of dock seedlings to follow.  :?

My plot is covered with dock  :(  But I have managed to clear quite a lot of it by out relentlessly digging it out - and my chickens go absolutely mad for it!! They run round and round their pen when they see me picking handfuls for them!

I must admit that the soil is amazing, having been worked for so long (prior to the recent neglect).  They seem to come up intact, without too much effort.  If I was finding dock like these in my garden, then I would have had a hernia by now trying to dig them out, as we are in a very clayey area (hence the name "Red-ditch").

the roots on weeds are surprisingly large, when i first dug my patch in my garden - it was just lawn b4- some of the weed roots were the full depth of my spade.
