Oh no not again
« on: March 27, 2009, 18:51 »
One of the ex-bats is breathing open beaked and sneezing.  Can't get to see the vet till tomorrow.  She's running around, eating and drinking but I'm now paranoid about respiratory infections.  I watched them for a while and her breathing isn't noisy and not always open beaked.  Her eyes are bright, she's very alert (and didn't want to be picked up and looked at, thank you very much) and she wasn't like this this morning.

She hasn't done the nose dive that Alice did but I'm just being overly paranoid.  To my shame this one hasn't got a name.  What will they call out at the vets?

Really hope all goes well at the vets. Mine just got called Duck at the vets. I did actually tell them her name but they kept thinking that she was a he as the only animal I had registered there is a cat called Oliver!
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

she just got called chicken.  Baytril twice a day for a fortnight.  Very nice vet and very interested.  She's now in the scrubbed out isolation coop.  She ate her bread with baytril soaked on it with great gusto.  Hope I've got her treated in time.  Feeling really low about it :(

You've done all you can and a lot more than most do.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and Chicken.

Mrs Chicken has survived the night and frost.  She wolfs down her bread and Baytril :)  if anything, I think she's breathing is easier :) (fingers crossed). I found the sachet of decongestant that the vet gave me for poor Alice so I've put that in her water.  Hopefully she's on the mend. Touching wood and every other superstition. :)

Well that's a good start and the fact she is eating so well must be a good sign.

sounds good to me - getting them to eat the baytril-soaked bread is the first hurdle!!

(and the other chickens not getting to it first.....)

She's in a small separate coop and run within sight of the others, to reduce the risk of them catching anything.  She wolfs down the bread and anything I offer her and has been eating grass all day.  I would have her in the house if I hadn't got 6 week old chicks in there!
