Chitting sweetcorn
« on: April 26, 2012, 16:00 »
Right, going to take the plunge and start the sweetcorn. Ice cream tub (with lid)... check. Damp kitchen towel ready to make a 'seed sandwich'... check. Just one question: where am I gonna put the tub to germinate (germinate the seeds, not the tub, though multiplying tubs of ice-cream might be a lucrative business and very tasty).

Mine were dragging their heels in the kitchen, so I threw them in the airing cupboard.

1/2" chits next day!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Airing cupboard for me to!
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Mine went in the propagator, purely because it was on with something of my dad's in there.

Bottom of airing cupboard. Check every day as chitting can be rapid. I plant them once the chits are 5mm, taking them out as they are ready. Some will take just 2 days others longer. Have patience with the laggards and usually most of them germinate.

I dropped the seeds into a glass, covered them with water and let them soak overnight. Sowed into modules the next evening and  they started to germinate over the next 2-3 days. This is the first time I've tried sweetcorn and thought the seed looked really dry and tough, that's why I went for the rehydration approach lol
Beginners luck that they all germinated this way, I s'pose.
This was all done indoors. For the past 4 days they have been out in the plastic greenhouse then brought back indoors in the evening.  Here they are now, I think it's about 10 days from sowing ... didnt make a note of the date

I`ve had the same problem as last year with my sweetcorn, 35 out of 40 seeds chitted on wet kitchen roll, all planted into paper pots in the conservatory, but only 18 seedlings have grown.

I have another packet, which is a different variety, Equinox. Again, 40 seeds, 23 of which have been planted straight into paper pots, the other 17 are being chitted.

I await the results with interest.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

I soaked 20 overnight in warm water an sowed them half inch deep, and pointy end down, in modules the following morning.  I put the modules in a clear plastic sack and left them in doors.

they were all up within 3 days.

It's the first time I have had 100% germination at the first sowing.

Well done!
I just thought they looked soooo dry that a bit
of pre-sowing rehydration seemed logical.
Good to hear it worked for you too  :)
