Am I too late for onion sets
« on: May 13, 2011, 20:51 »
I am just planning my first veg patch - hoping to get going out there tomorrow.  It has taken a lot longer than I thought to get to this point - I have some onion sets (Sturon) and reading the pack it states plant Feb - Mar.  I am guessing I am way too late to plant them, would that be right ?

no I have put them in this late before and they catch up fine.  Mine have been in for weeks and really haven't put on much growth yet!
3 dogs, 8 chickens, 4 rabbits 2 guinea pigs, 10 quail, 2 fish and a demanding daughter who has gone to uni and left me with 29 animals to care for!!=)

Yes, according to the chart on this site, it is too late
http://www.allotment-garden.org/vegetable/general/sowing-harvest-vegetable-chart.php

That being said, they won't keep, so you have nothing to lose by sticking them in asap.  they may not bulk up, and probably won't store well, but at the very least you might get some big spring onions  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I planted this time last year, I was late due to illness.

They were pathetic.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

must be the sea air here that helps them along then!  I am often late planting (as I run out of time!!) and mine have caught up (slightly smaller I admit but I just eat more at a time!) and I dont know if they keep well as we eat them so fast they dont have chance to rot!  As previous post said, there is nothing to lose as they dont keep so shove them in and hope for the best
