re-introducing a hen to a group
« on: October 23, 2010, 18:17 »
We had our hen in isolation for last week, but feel she is Ok to go back with the others and the isse was not medical.

I have a small pen in within their main one, we did put her in with the other whilst we watched, and most of the time they where fine, but then one would jump on top of her and start pecking her.

So back she went into the isolation pen.

They have been having a bit of a pace up and down at each other.

So my question is how can be re-introduce them to each other?

can you keep her within site of the others for a few days before introducing her to them again. I found it was just a few days of them prowling up and down and they were almost fine.

I put the food bowls either side of the fence that separated them.

good luck. I hope you get more replies and can use the answers

Yes that is what I am now doing. I have created a pen within the main pen.

sorry Jim now i have the right glasses on i see you did. There is a spray that tastes horrible to others that you can put on her to put them off pecking her. i think its called ani peck spray.

How long has she been separated from the others? You will probably have to just bite the bullet and let her find out how to defend herself. They can be really mean to each other cant they. Just be on hand to act as a referee. I do that whenever i introduce new hens. A half hour at a time until they are used to each other.

You can try and cheat them by putting her back in at night-they should wake up the next morning with her there and think nothing else of it!  we did that and they were fine, but may not work for all chickens.  It had something to do with the fact that they don't worry about things if they see them when they first open their eyes...  hope this help

Quick update.

She is now best of mates with the other 3 and possibley back up at the same pecking order as before!

She has made a full recovery.

We now thing she was not technicaly ill, but either sprained or twiested her leg or somthing or possibley got his with a falling apple

Their pen is under and around a couple of apple trees, and you picture a nice ripe Brambley falling from 10 ft up, it is quite a weight!

some poultry keepers say spray all the birds at night with a weak solution of vinigar and water to make them all smell the same , it works very well i believe , i have also read it in books
