I could hear piping but chicks haven't hatched.
« on: May 16, 2010, 17:43 »
I can hear two eggs making tiny pipping sounds, sounds like when you flick your finger nail - just very quite  :D :D . The other egg is silent - one I really didn't think it was good. So, is this them breaking into the air sac, if so how long before they start to break through? I would happen after the weekend ,  :(I'm back to school tomorrow, teaching, 'I don't want to go to school'   Oh well, I'm just pleased for my Pekin that after she has sat so well she will be a mummy!

What day is it Chuckmum 20,21?Anytime now by the sounds of things, you could come down to an inncy full of babies in the morning!!! once the first one is out that will incourage the others to hatch, leave them in inncy for 24 hrs after hatching.
Dont count ya chickens till they hatch!!!!!

It is day 22 since my Pekin has been sitting. I bought them for her from ebay! I did think they would have hatched earlier as they are Silkie eggs, but at least there is some noise! My other two broodies are sharing 4 pencilled wyandotte eggs, all look good so far, and are due next weekend!

You may find someone on the breeders listing:

http://www.poultry.allotment-garden.org/poultry-suppliers/index.php

I would try to get her a couple of day olds as you mention - last year when I had a failed hatch my poor girl just kept sitting even after I took the eggs away so in the end I got her 2 chicks that she took to wonderfully.

Let us know how you get on x

No chicks! The eggs are dud.
No joy in getting any chicks for my girl whose egg are duds, so I have given her two eggs from under another pair of broodies, that should hatch this weekend.
There were only four eggs that look fertile, three broody hens and two runs, the maths don't add up . Therefore, I have had to make my flakier hen stop sitting and am currently trying to de-broody her! The remaining broodies have two eggs each in two runs, much more harmonious, I hope!
How easy is it to break a broody? She is in the guinea pig run, with roosting bars from the Eglu, she has a slightly dampened rear to cool her and no eggs in sight! I feel very sorry for her. :(

I think you might have been better off not disturbing the eggs so much in the latter stages.  It's very hard to resist but pays off in the end.

Keeping her cool and not providing a comfortable nesting box is the best you can do but there's no guarentee this will work quickly.  You must practise patience Chuckmum.

Point taken, however I have only moved two eggs and very gently at that, less movement than them being candled. The main move has been the one hen who is not really a committed broody anyway.
I think after 25/26 days the first bantam eggs are no good.
