Sweetcorn too early
« on: April 25, 2013, 21:27 »
Hi
i'm a complete newbie and in my excitement it seems i made a total rookie mistake and sowed my sweetcorn seeds early in march  :( i am now reading everyone just starting theirs, so my question is what should i do? do i need to scrap them and start again or will they be ok? they are about 2 inches high and tbh to my novice eye they look great they have been in my unheated greenhouse since sowing

Hi,

I have sown my sweetcorn the same way for the past three years. First into individual root trainer/modules. Once the roots are coming out the bottom, I pot them on into 3" pots, to grow on abit longer (if weather is good, they can go straight outside as long as no frost is forecast). I find it best to keep them moving into bigger pots as this can buy you time. Not sure if its the right way to do it, but it has worked so far.

I have one lonely sweetcorn in the GH ... its about 4" now!  all my others are indoors in paper pots only just coming through from chitting!  The one in my GH is a different type from the ones in doors (sowed lots and they all rotted in the soil) ... as I dont know what type it is I know I shouldnt plant it with the others but I cant bear to through it in the  compost ..... what to do!!!!
2 Books and No idea!!!  Learning as I go!
