Water retaining gel crystals

Hi there, can anyone tell me if Wilko's water retaining gel crystals can be used safely with vegetables.

We already use them for our flower container pots and wondered if they can be used with vegetables as well.

Only with the threat of an extremely hot summer once again, it might be worth adding it to not only our veg container pots but around our allotment veg as well.

I've seen someone use them when planting tomatoes on the plot, they put a little in the hole just before they transplanted the tomatoes. I thought I might try it as they say it's going to be a very dry summer.

On the back of the Miracle-grow water storing crystals they suggest 15 - 20 scoops per square metre when using them on vegtable plots.
