A mechanic told me today I could run my 92 Daihatsu Fourtack on veg/diesel.

From what you're saying above though its not a good idea in winter?
A lot depends on your car.  Try it at 30% first of all.

I'm worried about not being able to start it. Guess I could try over Christmas when I'm not at work.

Do i just buy rapeseed oil from the supermarket and put it straight in? Or do i need to do anything to it first?

I'm glad we're back on this one - does it make any difference if you're turbo diesel - mine's a JTD whatever that means.

Nope - again start at maybe 30% to see how it starts and runs.

WG that's the best news I've had all week!
You absolutely absolutely sure before I go and potentially wreck my car?

Yup, I've been doing it for ages ... well ... ever since it became legal that is!

Have a Google around for yourself but note that you will find a lot of information which some find confusing.  You are considering (a) SVO as a component of the fuel in an unconverted diesel engine (SVO is Straight Vegetable Oil)

Option (b) is 100% SVO in a converted engine (usually pre-heated and/or double tank)

Option (c) is scrubbing of WASTE vegetable oil from chip shops, hotels, etc.  This requires methanol and some knowledge.

Anything you read which is over one year old is out of date with respect to UK regulations which now allow you to use 2500 litres of veg oil without paying duty and without registering with HMC&E.

This is indeed fantastic news!

I can't wait to try it although the OH did give me a slightly worried look - afraid I'll be ringing him at work to come and fetch me cos the cars blown up and/or smells of chips.

But what will the neighbours say...

They'll think I've finally lost the plot.  But at a saving of 25p a litre which it is now I think I shall have the last laugh.

£1355 / 0.25 = 5420 litres...
Now how many miles of driving would that require?

I am waiting delivery of my new car. I chose it because it gets 50+ mpg on a run and about 38 around town.

I asked can I run it on these new fuels, bio etc.

Are you mad they said not if you want to keep the Warrantees.
The minute you put anything else in your tank you lose the lot.

So sadly I will not be changing my fuel until that changes. I cannot risk the warrantee.  I am not happy about it but I know things do change.

But don't they say that if you use the wrong make of lightbulb or change the windscreen wiper?  How would they know what fuel you put in anyway.  If they did find out you could always say you ran out of petrol in a village where there was no petrol station and only a supermarket... :?:
