I am currently drying them in my shed for about 4 weeks now with the leaves still fully on which are also drying out, how do I tell when should I trim leaves and roots ?

I normally dry them for about 2 weeks with the leaf on, then cut them down leaving about 6ins of leaf and then keep on drying them untill the leaf has dried up and I can string them. If your not sure they are dry them for longer.

As Terry says, you need the leaves fully dried out Nash.  You can't really over dry them but if you store them with any moisture in the tops they will rot

I pulled mine and left them on the ground for about a week on the allotment. Luckily before the rains. Then put them on racks in the garage, in single layers. Will get round to bagging them up in  afew weeks or so

Pulled mine 2 days ago and today.... yes a big storm so all got wet..  going to move them into the greenhouse to dry tomorrow!

Like everyone else has said until all are very dry & brown. I then put rubber gloves on & rub all the dry loose papery skins off,pull the roots off. If you want you can use the dried leaves to string them up but I store mine in the blue trays I get from the greengrocers that stack. years ago I used to drop them individually down the leg of old tights & then tie a knot before dropping another one on top. When it was full I hung it up in the shed. When you want an onion you just cut the one at the bottom off. It worked really well.

Gavin - I cannot remember who it was but someone on the forum said that they put their onions in the greenhouse to dry off and it was so warm that they just sort of cooked and were ruined. If possible you would be better to use a garage or shed.

My greenhouse is fairly shaded from afternoon hot sun and also the door and window is wide open... no probs so far and they have dried well over the last few years in it...

My shed is full of other things and my garage is my laundry and office so cant use that
