Corn
« on: July 13, 2010, 17:51 »
Hi,

I have had my 6 hens now for about 2 months, they are on pellets and I have been giving them mixed corn. They love the corn but due to the small bits they are wasting more than they are eating a friend of mine uses flaked corn. Just wondered what other types etc people are using ?

thanks

Sarah

Hi Sally
Do you put the corn down with the pellets, we tend to just put some down for our boys and girls about 5 pm as a treat and they scoff it down
Dont count ya chickens till they hatch!!!!!

Hi,

The pellets are down all the time for them then like you do we just put a bit down as they are going in at night. I think we are putting a bit too much down or they are just not interested as they are full from munching all day on bugs etc ! Then the bit I have put down on the shed floor is getting wasted.
I give them a handful in a morning on the grass as a treat too. They do go mad for it when I put it down then.
I think I might try some bigger pieces flakes etc see what there is. Is it mixed corn you use ?

Welcome to the site Sally  :).

Ours have access to pellets 24/7. We give them a small handful of maize everyday as a treat because pellets are the main thing they should eat.
Wow, they do love their maize  ::)

Mine go mad for fresh or frozen sweet corn, doesn't last 5 minutes.
just try putting half the amount down, i don't feed mine in there coop, as when they go to bed they are there to sleep and poo, lol plus it just encourages the rats.
Be careful when giving them grass that they haven't pecked themselves as i believe that if it is too long it can cause either an impacted crop or sour crop can't remeber which one

Giving them long bits of cut grass could lead to impacted crop.
But I don't think Sally said she feeds them grass

Is it ok to hang a corn cob up for them?  I didn't realise they could eat frozen (thawed obviously) sweetcorn.  That's another thing I can put on their 'treat' list.  I worried that sweetcorn pieces would be too big for them.

What about frozen (thawed) peas, cauli, runner beans?  I've given them some shreaded cabbage and some apple (which they love).  Just want to vary it a bit.  I only give them one fruit or veg a day so I can keep an eye on if it upsets them or not.

we buy our dried corn its alot cheaper a 1kilo bag is only about 50p-£1. And you dont have to worry about it going off. I also give mine broccli just chuch the whole thing in they go mad for it. Some one told me to try frozen corn on the cob because it lasts longer. They peck at it until it thaws. They also like lettuce. And mealworms are their ultimate favourite.
1 dog -Chloe 1 cat - Oscar 2 hamsters - Flo and Tinkerbell 3 ferrets - Charlie, chip and rupert 3 light sussex - Madge, Henrietta and lucy-lou 2 black rocks - Peggy and Betty 1 puppy on the way i'm not mad i'm in love. :)
