Best way to water a newspaper pot ?
« on: March 30, 2010, 20:55 »
Was thinking how do you keep the compost moist use a paper pot ?

Do you use a spray or do you let the pots stand in seed tray with a small amount of water in it ?

Thanks

Tony

You know the little bottles, that kids and athletes use, with the pull up thing that opens them? well I use 1 of those and squirt a little bit into the middle of each pot.

The aim is to keep them damp rather than give them a soaking :)

I stand mine in water for half an our (about an inch) and then drain off the surplus.

As they are packed close together they stay upright but you need to be careful they don't flop our of the tray (sides are 3ins tall)

get a screwtop bottle, put tiny holes in the lid with a pin and hey presto a free mini watering can for the smallest of seeds and pots ;)
You can also control spray and spread with different sized holes on different lids..

Hope this helps?
Mickeyboy :)

oooops should have said needs to be plastic so you can squirt it :) :)

I just water them from above with a small watering can  - indoor plant type.

I have planted my first lot of seeds in newspaper pots after reading up how to make them on here (thank you!  :)) The first watering occurred outside in the garden before bringing them into the utility room, and I have to say I have been wondering how best to do this without spraying the whole of the worktop as well!  However, mine won't flop out of the seed tray because, after having moved house in September 2009, I haven't yet unearthed the seed trays  so I packed mine into the numerous ice cream cartons which we have collected and they stay nice and tight and well supported by the sides of the carton,  but still have plenty of air space around them so that they won't grow mould. What a good reason to eat lots of ice cream!  :D
