What type of apples are these?
« on: August 13, 2012, 21:02 »
I inherited this mature apple tree that was on my allotment when I started it this year. Anyone know what variety this may be?

wow thank you for the quick replies. I am lucky to have some at all given the lack of bee's around to pollinate. Ive had many more fall off and are now in my composter.

I think im really trying to see if these are eating or cooking apples really. I tried one today and it was bitter but not sure if it too early to be harvesting apples

Apples are ripe when the seeds turn dark brown.  I'm sure it won't be right yet, as it's an old variety, Sept/Oct is the usual apple picking time.

If it is ready to be picked it will come away easily when you gently lift it.

If you were to take a trip to Brogdale in Kent, with one of your apples someone there would
be able to identify it. It is an interesting place to visit as it has the national collection of fruit trees and soft fruit varieties.

RHS Wisley have apple days at apple harvest time ans someone there would be able to help too and you get to taste lots of different varieties of apples. It is a good day out.

There are often apple days around the country as others have said.

Keep an eye out in a month or so, and take them along for an ID.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
