Butternut Squash - are they the same as courgettes
« on: August 13, 2012, 20:30 »
It seems like I am having the same problem with my squash as I have with courgettes. A kind of tip rot due to lack of pollination. Is it the same problem - opinions please.
Taken over neglected veg garden at new home. Enemy number 1 Ground Elder. Then there is the furry terror - bunnies - to contend with!
Made a start have beds established but moved in too late for serious planting. We shall see what 2015 brings.

I'm not sure lack of pollination causes tip rot.  I think it's dampness.  If you remove the flower when it begins to shrivel it could help.

As well as removing the flower you might consider raising the fruit up slightly from the ground by placing them gently onto a brick. This may help by keeping them drier.

A wet, cool and sun-lacking season hasn't helped at all.  :(

It seems to happen with the earlier fruits here, and we had the same problem Thestens.

It may be that its just too damp, and the conditions are poor for them to get going properly.

Paul and Aunt S. have got good ideas here, and they could be the solution, as I keep peering at our forming ones, and wondering if they'll thrive! If the stems are forging ahead, you should get a few more fruits forming, and they could be fine! Depends on what sort of weather we get over the next few weeks...
