Just Nicola for me.

Can't fault 'em.. really waxy..better than Jerseys.

I tried International Kidney (Jerseys) twice but they always ended up being floury ?

No Idea why  :?

Quite simply - the answer lies in the soil. Have you been putting seaweed (vraic) on your's for centuries?

The soil in Jersey is VERY rich & fertile.

Vraic
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

It's not so much that the spuds break up the ground, but you do in the cultivation of them.....

First you clear the ground to prepare it.
Then you 'hill up' two or three times during the growing season.
Finally you dig the ground over again to harvest them.

First year and we're keeping it simple so growing:-

Foremost
Maris Piper
Desiree
Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet, and so are you.
But the roses are wilting, the violets are dead, the sugar bowl's empty, and so is your head.

I've been reading about International Kidney potatoes and if grown to maturity they become floury, but if lifted immature will be waxy and are like a salad potato.  I hope this helps.

No probs, I'm a sad person who is always on the internet looking for something.  I learn from it too.

Hope it works.  I'll let you know how I get on with my spuds as you've suggested.

Not a problem...grow what you prefer!

Going with Arran Pilot (can never go wrong with these ! ) Belle de Fontenay (new to us, but always wanted to grow them) lots of Orkney Rogue (Munt reckons they are fab!) and Picasso.....these are an absolute must!!!! ....saying that, they probably won't grow here!!!! ;)

Thanks for that information.  I grew Maris Peer in my garden last year and they did pretty well apart from a bit of wireworm, which I understand is because potatoes haven't been grown in my garden before or at least in quite a long while.  They did well I think because the weather was so wet.  Maris Peer don't like to dry out so I chose wisely last year.

I just chose Red Duke of York because it ticked the boxes in which I like to use potatoes.  However I watched a repeated Gardener's World on UKTV gardens the other day when they were doing a trial on different potatoes and Sarah Raven said you couldn't beat this variety for taste.  So I may have chosen wisely again for someone new to vegetable gardening.  I will have to let you all know!

Talking of spuds, I called in to a small independent garden/hardware shop near us to get some seed potatoes yesterday.  He only had a few bags left out of 6.5 tons delivered in January.  I was very impressed and left the shop wondering what a delivery of 6.5 tons of spuds must have looked like!  I will definitely go there again because he seems to be able to sell just about everything cheaper than the big chains.  Oh, the spuds were Marfona; I had never heard of them, but he clearly knows his onions.
