cock or hen??
« on: July 24, 2013, 10:24 »
My silkies and bantam have inbreed I think and 3 chicks were born 5th May, I have one pure silkie and 2 mixed (they have yellow beaks) at the minute they have been rehomed but the lady has insisted she only wants hens, (I have my doubts!!) so at the time of taking this photo they were all the same size, around 8 weeks old the two mixed have very red faces (hence why im thinking cockerel! they also look a little dinosaur like, long necks and legs! )

What are your thoughts will I be getting these back??

Tricky! Do they flick their heads? I've found my she/he sex change cockerel (Sylvana/Sylvio) flicked his head a lot and then I knew why when he started to crow! His successor (the lovely Napoleon) also did this whereas the girls just seem to get on with things with the minimum of fuss (as ever...)  :D

Big feet could be a bit of a giveaway too (Sylvana was always rather "butch" for a wee hen!)

didn't notice much head flicking? All of there feet are massive

when we had a silkie he/she we noticed a growth spurt around month 4, but wasn't really until he started to crow and then he developed his comb etc around 8 months!! eekkk

Hmmm! I think Sylvana became Sylvio around 20-30 weeks (can't quite remember how old he was when I got him). It happened very quickly - we went on holiday for 2 weeks leaving the MIL chicken sitting two hens and returned to a fully developed cockerel and a (rather tired and slightly bemused) hen!

My girls look a bit dinosaur like with long necks as they are non-bearded - they also have quite big feet but they are still quite dainty (can a chicken's feet really be dainty?  ::) ).  Sylvio's and Napoleon's feet were seriously big
