I understood that the Morello was really a cooking cherry?

Yes, but we find it much more useful than a sweet cherry as it freezes excellently and can be used in pies, sauces etc.  When very ripe you can them raw and they have a very rich though still slightly tart flavour.

At our previous house we had a large one fan trained on a North wall.  It was spectacular in blossom but when the fruit started to ripen we had to net it very carefully and still lost a few cherries where they were close enough to the net for birds to reach through the net.

If you want something really unusual what about a Mazzard (an edible Wild Cherry)? Kevin Croucher at Thornhayes Nursery has them on very dwarfing rootstock, which would do you nicely.

I have a 2m cherry tree that was already present when I bought the house 2 1/2 years ago. I know its a cherry as last year it had one pair of cherries on it (none the year before) the birds ate the cherries before I did.

Any tips for a more fruitful season. I could cover it with some netting or get a plastic snake, but I will still feel a bit hard done by if I only get to eat 2 cherries

Thanks

My maths shows that bird is equal to or greater than the word...
