Help! I think I've got blight-what do I do?
« on: July 08, 2007, 01:11 »
well, not me personally but my spuds! Ok, I know this a bit obsessive but I can't sleep, my neighbour at the lottie told me today that my potatoes have got blight, I've looked on the net and some say just to dig them up and store them but others say to cut off the foliage and leave them, which is the best solution? I haven't got many so digging them all up wouldn't be a problem, and what about next year will it be enough to just rotate them or will I not be able to have potatoes next year? any feedback welcome, I need sleep  :!:

yep, remove foliage leave for 10 days + then you can lift as normal.

Blight's prevalent this year it's even in the local paper farmers reckon they may loose 20% of their drops around here.

been over today and cut off all the tops; lifted some too, and have now been told the problem with my plot is that I've got wireworm, hence the holes in my spuds, apparently it's because the plot has been left to grass too long; now what???

Digging the plot helps to control wireworm usually you find it on plots that have been neglected for some time or grassland etc, I believe a dressing of lime also helps to kill it, whisky posted a useful link a little while ago about organic control Here it is for you.

thanks for that Rich, at this rate, I don't think I'll be bothering with spuds next year, my first year at this is not going as well as I would have liked, never mind, there's always the year after next

Keep trying spuds worth the effort for earlies, I thought I was going to have a bad year for spuds but so far it's been ok, going to lift the remaining earlies this week so I can get my leeks in before holiday season starts and the kids are off
