I've never grown them but all the family like them (!) and I wondered if anyone can please recommend an easy, good cropping variety for a novice to grow. My soil is a good loamy clay.

Most of the varieties will grow well and easily. The big trick with sprouts is that at planting time (of seedlings) to literally firm in the soil around the plant with your foot. Pack it down well. This forces the roots down and will later prevent the top heavy plants from flopping over in winds.

and if you are growing a tall variety stake the plants when they get to about 2 ft tall

oh dear - I did the firming but not the staking (not properly anyway) and hoped that next year that would be the answer....

Christmas sprouts weren't quite what we're used to...
