herbs?
« on: May 30, 2011, 18:23 »
well my new allotment is coming on really well, picking hundreds of staawberries now. :) loving it but i now still have loads of space and think i might do a herb bed. my question is:
obviously they will be permanent so is there any herbs i should avoid like rosemary? as obviosuly it will turn into a bush.
what the best way to place them, do i put them in sections so they have lots of room?

any thought would be great   :)

Research what you are thinking of growing and space them accordingly. I have my perennial herbs in a bed dotted around so as not to look regimental and as they get bigger they do need thinning/dividing.

And your point being? So do I do a lot of cooking with herbs.  :tongue2: Out of that selection I would plant mint in a pot on its own, re-plant annually the basil, coriander and parsley and have the rosemary in a bed with others like thyme, sage etc. :) Oh, and  I planted lovage last year and it went daft!

We're putting parsnips in behind the potatoes this year. :)

i have tried twice now with parsnips this year. i give up. i might just do loads of beans and mangetout and we have a veg market you can take your stuff to sell. probably more worth while now.

Oregano is another very useful herb that's hardy and easy to grow and easy to keep under control. French tarragon is another, though it can be a little bit tender so it needs a sheltered spot.
