I have another question.  I have a hen whose comb has started drooping to one side and is becoming a purplish color.  She doesn't seem discontent - eats and runs with the others.  No droopy wings or sadness.  I just never saw a comb looking like that before.  They all have been molting and laying more sparsely - could that have anything to do with it?

Thanks so much.  I will pick up some shell today.  I put out all my leftover salad, kale, cabbage, etc., and also put out alfalfa hay (my horses don't mind sharing!).  They also get to roam the back yard and garden area about three times per week.  However, I will buy them some extra kale and cabbage this week for extra treats.  Thanks, again.

Hi Nana !

Are you getting frosts in your part of the USA yet ?
If you are then its possible that the comb may have been frosted.

Purple comb could also be pointing to a bit of a ticker ( heart) problem and poor circulation. Theres not a lot you can do about that.

It could also that as she's moulting, she maybe feeling a bit run down. The colour and condition of a chickens comb is a great barometer as to how its feeling. :D

That's what I was thinking.  Check her breathing and listen to see if she is a bit rattley

Thanks to you all for the posts.  This is such a great site.  The coolest weather we've had was in the mid-50's (F) a couple of weeks ago.  The girls have been molting, but I think they are about finished now.  And the nearest Fuddrucker's is by the Bass Pro Shop in Grapevine about 25 minutes away!  One of my favorite hamburger places!

Thanks, again!  I will keep an eye on her and keep y'all posted!

I will go out and listen to her today.  Most of my older girls are used to being held - she's about two.  My youngest brood (5 months) are not as friendly and used to it yet!
