Humidity for incubators
« on: June 23, 2010, 17:01 »
I trusted my first Incy and let it run on the factory setting for chickens which was 47%.

However I now have another Incy the same but an older ex-demo model and this has settings of 45% going to 60% for the last 3 days when turning stops.

Could I have your opinions please?

Sounds reasonable.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Sounds reasonable.
Which one?  The increase at day 18?

Humidity for the first 18 days needs to be low, sort of 40-50% is fine, but the last 3 days it needs to increase to 65-70%  Individual incies actually work best at slightly different humidity, and many of us that hatch loads have our preferences that we would swear to. Much depends on the fan, the ventilation, even the humidity of the room its in. The key is to keep it constant for 18 days, then increase, either by adjusting settings, or adding an additional container of (lukewarm) water or a sponge.

DO NOT OPEN INCIE after day 18. the resultant drop in humidity can dry out the membrane of pipping eggs, making hatching difficult enough to actually cause failure to hatch. :(

Chicks can survive 24-48 hours after hatch just resting in the incie, living off their yolk sac. As soon as they are ALL hatched and fluffied up, then they can come out for a drink and some chick crumbs  :D

Personally I think some people are over cautious with the humidity at hatching, any decent incubator will increase the humidity back to the set level within a minute or 2.

Thank you both.

My incys are very good at getting the temp and humidity back up when required.  I'm glad I bought a decent one  :D

So as along as I know the correct setting ........ ::)
