Will they lay in the nest box next?
« on: January 05, 2010, 20:08 »
One of our hens has now started to lay (at last fresh eggs..yum)
However she is laying in the run or in the litter tray i have positioned under the roosting bars.
Will she eventually work it out?

I keep a golf ball in every nesting box, like aunty suggests. Most get the hang of it very quickly, some however, insist they know better, whilst others seem to lay as though it just "fell out" while they werent looking, near the waterer, over by the gate, in the front doorway! wherever she happened to be at the time!  Guess some chooks are bird-brained, while others are deviously intelligent

The golf balls need to be Top Flites not Nikes though, otherwise they might attract Tiger Woods who's not averse to playing a round with the chicks!

The chooks could peck at a boiled egg if they get bored and be encouraged by what they find and keep doing it. I did try filling an eggshell with polyfilla but it didn`t  last long.

Don't think a hard boiled egg will be very hygienic to use for any length of time and you don't want to contaminate the eggs.
