New coop coming on Sunday
« on: April 30, 2009, 15:39 »
Hi all,
Brand-new almost-owner here, so sorry if I am very un-knowledgable!

I have a new coop being delivered on Sunday, I've been told that it has been treated with a 'water based anti fungicidal animal safe and environment friendly stain'

Before I go and bankrupt myself buying eveything and anything I can lay my hands on, what do people recommend I do? Should I give it a good scrub with *something* once it has been erected or do I just start a routine once I've got birds?

Plus, I want to make myself a 'kit' of essential 'things' what do you all have in yours?  I'm assuming a dustpan and stiff brush are number one and some sort of cleaning fluid, but now I'm lost as some places say yes I can use Jeyes fluid and other places say not to.

Eeek! Help please! Chelle

sounds quite posh in itself!

welcome to the madhouse eveshamchelle!

I don't think it'll need washing down to start with, but I clean mine with jeyes fluid every month (empty it completely and scrub it all down) then rinse it throughly and let it dry before bedtime.  we save our old used pan brushes and scouring sponges.
you'll need a bucket, too.

for cleaning up poo every day in the run, a fire shovel and a stick.
we use newspaper on the bottom of the house under the perches so that the (many many) droppings can drop onto it and then we whip out the paper in the morning and put new stuff down - sooo simple!

Newspaper! Doh! What a great idea, I'm going to start sticking it in there tomorrow. I've had to keep apologizing for my pooey hands from cleaning out every morning. Nic.

I think the lino idea is brilliant! You can just whip it out to scrub. How ingenious!  :)
