Holes in Spuds
« on: September 20, 2010, 12:28 »
We are new to Allotment growing, so this might be very common but new to us. We harvested our Potatoes this weekend and whereas the crop was not bad for our first attempt we were disappointed by one thing. A lot of the tubers had small holes in them, they are approx 2 or 3mm in diameter and not pest was visible anywhere. The tubers are not affected but it does mean you have quite a bit of trimming to do when peeling them. Does anyone know what they are and how do we stop them re-appearing next year.

There is another thread on this at the moment. Spuds are munched by lots of things like wireworm, eel worm and slugs. Little holes like you describe could be wireworm. Not sure what you can do other than keep turning over the ground - let the birds at them. You can try growing earlies that are not in the ground so long and so should not be so badly affected. Sowing a green manure of mustard is meant to effect the eggs of some of the nasties.

Sowing green mustard works in the following way, The wireworm feed on the mustard which apparently is their fav food, turn into adults and fly off to infest someone else. Greem mustard  is also a very good source of nutrient for the soil as well as the roots breaking the ground for you.

I don't think it is wire worm as I have established these leave tiny brown holes, these hole are much larger.

Slugs I would say.
A nematode slug killer will help as it goes into the soil to reach the small slugs that stay underground.
Also try to harvest potatoes as soon as you can to minamise damage.
