new to growing onions
« on: November 18, 2011, 07:13 »
I sowed some onion seeds last april/may; they are now the size of shop spring onions with bulbs up to 10mm diameter. Are these "sets" which will grow next year into full sized onions or is what I see all i am going to get? Sorry I cannot remember the variety.

These are not sets -- sets are specially treated to stay small and then grow into a full sized onion when replanted.

They may not get that much bigger in spring before putting out their flower spike (bolting)

You could enjoy them now though  :)

Depending on how much you've got - pickle them, slice and freeze or anything else you may wish to do with them.  But they will rot if you don't take them out.

if you are going to plant them again next year try starting them off in your green house in feb
but you still should have had a good size onion this year any chance of the name of the seed you planted.cant understand why they are so small as said pull them now before they rot :)

Onion seeds are sown on Christmas day morning traditionally but any time over the Christmas holidays will do, it looks like you had sown then too late that's why they did not come too anything, Mike
