Funny things on tomato plant
« on: July 03, 2021, 13:50 »
I was tying up one of my tomato plants. One of the crimson crush or plum types. I saw these kind of spiky things on the stem (see photo).
They are not insects but some sort of growth. I pulled the plant up thinking it might spread to the other ones.
Any ideas what it might be please?

Difficult to be sure from the photo, but they look like the start of adventitious roots, which you often find at the bottom of the stem. Is this where they were?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, they were at the bottom. So I pulled up the plant for no purpose then?

Not to worry. I have several left. And thanks for putting my mind at rest.

That's the sort of plant that I often feel sorry for after I've dumped it, and have been known to go out to the compost heap, find it and get it going again!

But last year, I had some with a very peculiar staining patch on the fruits on two plants, and we all thought here, that it really wasn't good to keep, so it did get taken away and destroyed...

If you can manouvre (next time they are spotted) these auxiliary roots into the soil, even by placing a plant pot nearby your plant will be all the more healthy, stronger and hopefully produce more tom's.  Cheers Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !
