Advice for germinating alstroemeria seeds please!
« on: April 06, 2012, 22:19 »
After 3 previous attempts at growing alstroemeria from seed with precisely a 0% success rate, I vowed never to bother again.  However, I was at the garden centre this morning, and was browsing the seed section, and a packet of alstroemeria seeds just erm... jumped, into my basket.

Any advice on getting them to germinate this time?  Please?
No matter how many plants I have in my garden, I can always find room for one more.

Have you tried this sort of approach?

The pour hot water over is what I do with my Parsley sowings

I spose it just means they like it hot before they will germinate  :)

Seeds now suitably cooked!  They're now in the heated propagator.  Hope its going to be 4th time lucky!

They're germinating!!!!!!!!!!

Got 5 little seedlings this morning, after less than 2 weeks in the heated propagator!  Obviously cooking the seeds first is the way to go!!  :D

Glad to hear that GYO Girl - my Alstroemeria was bought as a plant about 3 years ago and despite conditions not being "according to the book" (ie, not in full sun, not moisture-retentive soil, and not frost-protected in winter) they have done me proud and have even spread a little via their rhizomes.

Very pretty flowers and very hard to think of anything else which flowers continuously from about early June right through to the first frosts.  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
