Should I use anything to prevent mites?
« on: October 03, 2009, 00:32 »
I clean my girls out weekly and sprinkle stalosan in their house, they have just newspaper as litter. Should I be doing anything else to keep away mites/lice etc?
They have a roof on the most exposed part of their run and also a large leylandi which covers the rest of it like a huge green umbrella, so the ground hardly get damp at all. Part of the outside run has wood chips down the rest is a series of dust baths and logs to perch on! They haven't had mites etc yet.

I think what you are currently doing is OK.

I assume your house is wood, in which case early next spring I'd give it a very good clean out using a power spray or steam clean and a detergent such as Poultry Shield or similar and when dry spray the inside with an insecticide which has a residual effect will retain an insecticide protection for about 3 -6 months or so.  After this treatment continue with your normal routine clean outs.  You can repeat this in 6 months.

Make sure your house is as RM unfriendly as possible. Eliminate as many nooks and cracks as possible and don't use roofing felt or similar means of construction which provide humid and inaccessible hiding places for them to breed in.

Keep spot checking for red mite and be prepared to treat with insecticide if you find colonies.

Yes it's registered for professional use so I shouldn't be reccommending it on an amateur site as Auntie points out below.  I'm still smarting from the slap!

Yes it would - just clean with water and sprinkle with diatom.

Hillfooter you should NOT be recommending treatments that are only available to professionals on these forums.  The members here are mostly amateurs and we are not insured for the legal bills if things go wrong, we will pass the bills on to you.  Consider yourself slapped by Aunty
