Garlic
« on: April 25, 2010, 18:58 »
I've noticed that some leaves on my garlic are starting to turn yellow, some are starting to wither at the tips. I've been stringent with watering so I was wondering if there might be some other reason for this?

Do they need to be planted deeply? I just pushed mine in to the surface in the autumn as I do with my onions and they look fine. Would I get a more impressive bulb size with
 deeper planting?

Mine are yellowing too!  Does anyone know the reason for this?
Now then, I am a very pleasant lad from York.  I have a decent half plot on Holgate allotments.

Garlic doesn't need to go deep. As for the yellowing tips it could be number of things, including early ripening or too much shade or animals peeing on it.

I'll try chempak no 2 formula - sounds like a good idea.

Out of interest what soil pH does Garlic prefer?  I noticed that this raised bed I have these in is acidic...a problem?

its nitrogen and is the perfect tonic for all plants at this time of year.
sulphate of ammonia is even better.never use these true nitrogenous feeds after the month of june though.
its a perfect spring boost though when temps are right and growth is in demand.

Alys Fowler also planted hers that deep in a Youtube clip so there must be something in it. Sounds like a winter 2010/11 experiment to me  ;)

I have just bought some to plant this week. Last year mine went yellow but I couldn't tell you the PH of my soil as I have never tested it.

My garlic does this every year.  I have heard various reasons for it, including that it is ready to be harvested when this happens.  I've never worried too much about it, since it always turns out just fine.
