Seaweed from the beach
« on: April 19, 2009, 16:37 »
I have come back from the beach with 2 carrier bags full of seaweed and would like to know what type of veg and plants would most benefit from this compost  and how best to prepare (soak/wash/chop up) and apply it.

Thanks.

hi seaweeds great stuff but take a bit of prep, best lay it out to dry for a bit then run the lawn mower over it to chop it up it can then be used as a mulch. hope that helps... ;)

Wash it first before you dry it out and cut it up is my advice. Going to make a seaweed juice?

I live about 35 foot away from the high water mark so I can get as much seaweed as I want.

I add it to my compost heap, but a lot of the locals just add it direct to the ground whilst fresh, it soon shrinks and breaks up and what doesn't blow away (It's windy up here) will add to the soil.

I don't do that because I reckon it would burn plants too easily.

What's his name off of Gardeners World was adding it to Potato trenches fairly fresh on Friday.

I know it attracts flies something terrible. I have put some in the compost bin and I will dry the rest out and add to the soil. Would it be ok to dig it into in the soil before I plant out my Peas and Broad beans as I know they like rich organic matter ?

As for a liquid feed, I have some from the garden center in a bottle. I was thinking of comfrey leaves as I have some plants in the garden to harvest.

I dug in a bin liner full at Christmas where I wa going to plant my spuds - but would have been better to chop it up first as others have said as I'm still finding clumps of it when i earth up   some of it seems to decompose quicker than other types, but I've no idea about different species

some people reckon the salt in it stops the slugs from getting at your spuds...anything that helps eh?
