What do I do with these chilli plants?
« on: September 28, 2007, 15:00 »
Just been given two big chilli plants, fruits currently green and orange. Don't know what variety. About three inches long so your average cooking chillies by the look of it. Do I wait and see what colour they eventually turn out, pick the chillies and then try and overwinter the plants in the (unheated) greenhouse?

Or what? Any suggestions?
Growing salad leaves isn't rocket science.

I've put all mine that are in pots in an unheated greenhouse. Seems to work at the moment for ripening but I think I'll give them a bit of heat later on in Winter to try and keep them.

I wonder if they will tolerate being outside all winter, now that we don't have frosty winters (at least not down here)

As Agapanthus and muntjac hints on it, that's for the time being, I would really be surprised if they pulled through in an unheated greenhouse, let alone outside. And even if they did what would be the point? A bunch of stressed out plants...
If you want to overwinter your plant, give it some space in the kitchen, or similar, methinks.

Mine in pots in the greenhouse are fine at the moment and still covered in flowers,I just keep a close eye on them and occassionally they are ok until Dec.but definatly stressed. If you have only fruit and no flowers just bring inside to ripen.

aren't chilis perennials? once nighttime temps dip to around 5C, I'm going to take them indoors to overwinter. I've read they're vv sensitive to frost - even ground frost can get em. These are my chilis:

I started em off in August, I'm hoping that by say April next year it will be a strong leafy plant ready for a flying start. These ones are f1 so hopefully heavy croppers. I'm expecting them to be dormant indoors due to the lack of light - is this realistic?
