Two new chooks!
« on: February 27, 2008, 18:29 »
:D  Well, i got hold of the BHWT co-ordinator in my area, and she said they're inundated with calls - she said they're struggling to find the hens for people! How great is that!!!!!  :D

Anyway, it's bad for us though! lol.. As we're looking at sometime after easter before we hear back with a date for rehoming.

So in the meantime, we're getting two new chooks tomorrow to keep chooky company!  :D  Then when we get our rehoming date, we'll be rehoming at least 5 ex-batts.

We've got a choice between Blue Haze, and Speckledy Maran, as we wanted a heavier breed so they can't hop the fencing

Anyone have any advice about which is best to go with? Or one of each?  :D

So excited!!!!!! Will post pics of the new girls tomorrow  :D

I'm in kent - so a bit far to travel, especially with the chooks

Good luck with helping out! I didn't realise they were taking on volunteers - i might enquire about that - how rewarding.. good on you!  :D

     I have had a cuckoo hybrid and a light sussex hybrid now for about three weeks and they can DEFINITELY 'hop the fence'. We'd got used to our pekin bantams and elderly hybrids not even trying to get out.

So - fence is getting taller (now they use the roof of the house as a staging post) and wings are getting clipped (just means they can't get back in from ground level) :x

Ho hum - chicken run is beginning to look a bit like Colditz :?

Yes, Yes Aunty - piccies when I get my new camera

Lol @ colditz.. ours is looking a bit similar i must say

Ours is only a 5.5ft fence, but we've put barbed wire around the top to deter any foxes and to try and discourage the chooks from jumping over. We clip the wings too, and so far (touch wood!) we haven't had an escape... however, watch this space      lol

I think we've decided on one of eah, by the way
