Carrot fly? - some flies seen under enviromesh
« on: May 14, 2012, 21:26 »
I built the tunnel with enviromesh over my carrot rows and stupidly did not ensure that all the mesh is secured on the sides  :(. I found on Saturday a few flies on the inside and I am just feeling very demotivated about it all.
What do you think I should do? Abandon the patch and start again? The carrots have not germinated yet... Any advice gratefully appreciated :).

On top of everything I saw today that there are these brown patches on the side of the mesh and it has been ripped (does not looks like it was caused by the bricks though) :(.

*Edited title as really need help with this...

I wouldn't abandon the patch yet - you've no idea whether the flies were carrot flies, for a start  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Carrot flies are quite distinctive with orange-ish legs.

and they are quite small too, so often go unnoticed, so the ones you saw could be anything.

Probably all is well

Thank you Aunt Sally. I did check on google for an image and it looked somewhat darker that's why I panicked. However, comparing the fly to the pic you have posted, they were all dark brown and evenly coloured.
I will go tomorrow to remove the very few weeds that have appeared and replace the mesh very securely :).

(From very depressed to very happy  )
