Are we too late to split the rhubarb

The two crowns on the plot are nearly three foot wide. Can we split them and how many into.
Dont want to ruin the plant but they are taking over

Yes, can still be split. Don't crop them in the first season after spliiting = so you might want to split some-now and some-next-year.

Plan B might be to split and force them next year? (And then plant back out and leave them a year to recover before cropping)

As Kristen suggests, I would split one now, leaving the other for cropping. Then vice versa next year. That way you won't lose out on Rhubarb this season. :)

I am not really a rhubarb lover but it was hubbys idea, just like the idea of having 11 blackcurrant bushes

As the season gets later the buds will start to swell and be more prone to damage, otherwise fine to split.

No need to dig the whole lot up. Dig down and find a nice young part of the root with buds and chop it off. No need for a huge piece of root. That way the original will crop as usual. Last time I cup off 3 quite small pieces and then planted them together, the result was excellent. Just consider how tiny some of the pieces are that are offered in garden centres.
