growing asparagus
« on: January 04, 2012, 21:48 »
I wish to grow asparagus this year and I would appreciate some advice from those with more experience as I would deem myself to be a complete novice.

1. Order some instantly.

2. Get a bed ready. digging, manuring, whatever, depending on the soil needs doing.

3. Plant when arrive in a couple of months or so time.

As of current, I do not know the best value for price, but DT Browns supplied me with very good plants at a good price a few years ago.

I bought some from here and they were excellent. Lots of information on growing on their website

http://www.asparagus-in-kent.co.uk/

They lift in March and hold in a chiller until dispatch. They will dispatch up to about mid-May.

+1 Had mine from there - most were large and well rooted and have grown very well in their first year, much better than the shrivelled up things in the stores.

I have been given some shriveled up things from the stores for a prezzy, but I'll give them a chance.

I got 24 from Kings and they were great quality - am looking forward to giving them a real hammering in this, their third, year. Particularly good value if your allotment society is in the NSALG scheme with them

That's a good scheme. I had not looked at them, but indeed £14 for 12 is a very good price.

Had some from there in 2009. I have to say I've had no problems and they are getting well established. Took first harvest in 2011, not much as I ended up sharing with the slugs  >:(
