Netting for peas
« on: April 24, 2012, 19:56 »
Silly question I'm sure but what's the best way to net my peas? At the moment they're just tiny shoots but i already have my cane supports up. Should I remove the canes and put netting over until they're larger enough to need supports or do I net right over the canes? Just seems a lot of netting for such tiny plants and I dont' want to get laughed at by my neighbouring plotholders for doing it wrong.

I planted out two rows in a raised bed at the weekend and netted over the canes as they help support the net anyway.

I will remove the net as soon as they start marching up the sticks. They are to tempting for the birds at the moment. I done this last year and the birds left them alone once they got established.
I hate netting it's horrible to put on and have it look tidy.

Pigeons are likely to be your main problem and will eat the shoots until they are out of reach  (about a foot unless you have inadvertently provided perches for them!)

I rig up low temporary netting around them which doesn't need to be too close as pigeons are pretty clumsy (and dumb!) and won't try to land in a confined space.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I have given up with peas; however I net them my sparrows find a way in  >:(  I am sure that I left no gaps but still I would come home from work and find them munching away.

I looked for their tunnel but couldnt find it

Although pigeons will sometimes have a peck at almost anything they tend to specialise in brassicas and peas.

I find that colonies of sparrows sometimes seem to collectively "learn" a new fad - in my case it's pecking runner bean flowers (and occasionally the shoots) apparently just for the fun of it,  they were also a complete pain in the neck when I grew summer raspberries but don't seem at all interested in the autumn ones.

Up to now sparrows have shown no interest in my peas............

I've actually managed to grow some peas in the garden this year, because I've put some netting up to stop the sparrers

Well, that's just the dilemma isn't it Mum - to net just about everything "just in case," or to find out too late that a crop that was "safe" last year isn't this time around!

I don't want to turn my garden into a sea of netting so I err on the "crossed-fingers" side of things, but that doesn't mean that one day I won't regret it!

I know what you mean  ::)
As I've said before my garden is across a footpath at the front of the house, so although it spoils the view from the house somewhat it means I get a bit of privacy in the back half of the garden.
It's harder for the neighbours to spy me through the netting

I started some early peas off in a pot with a hazel wigwam a couple of weeks ago. The first 2 or 3 shoots had emerged but have been nibbled to ground level over the last day or so. I have been cursing the slugs and applying pellets to the pot and the ground. After reading this I think the birds might be the culprets afterall ! I never thought to net them. I think l'll push some more seeds in and net this time.
