Netting peas.
« on: July 16, 2008, 23:29 »
I've done searches but can't seem to find the right answer.
I planted some peas at the weekend, that I found in my dad's shed. Well fan my brow, they've germinated.
When do they need netting to protect them from bods etc. Is it immediately?
And I'll ask here but if no replies I'll post in the appropriate thread. Can you use a 'Munty frame' with French beans? No one on our site has one and I think I've cleared enough ground to slip in a small one. OOer missus. I want to be the first on our site to have one.
Also, an old chap from a couple of plots down gave me some leeks. I planted them and immediately there was a plague of flies. What pest do leeks attract? Did I plant them at the wrong time? :?:

I have to net my peas at two different times.

Firstly NOW!!! The pigeons just love those tatsy tender shoots, so do the mice, so I cover them with tightly pegged down fine netting. One they are about 3" high, the netting comes off & I begin the process to staking the plants up.

Second time is when the pods begin to form. This time I find a loose netting on top of the plants is needed to stop the pigeons squashing down the foliage to make a firm 'helipad' & pecking away at the pods.

I see no reason why you can't use a 'Munty' frame with French beans - as long as they are climbing ones, not dwarf ones!

It's not too late for leeks, I've just planted a few more out that I was given, but I don't know what the flies are, I've never come across those.

Just wondering what thread you'd call more appropriate than this one!  :D
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

*, they're dwarf beans. So here's 2 more questions;
What do you grow dwarf beans on? :?
What, if any 'climbing' type beans can I put in now, to give smug look over rest of plot holders?  :?  :)

1 - Nothing - they support each other.

2 - You'd be struggling to catch them up now!

Double booger. Swear filter won't let * through.
I'll have to keep my powder dry 'til next year and then go nuclear with the 'Munty frame'. If that's not mixing my metaphors.
