Growing Comfrey in heavy shade
« on: August 20, 2019, 15:22 »
In November I will be moving some Gooseberries because it is too shady for them.  According to the Bumblebees  conservation trust, comfrey is a good plant for bumblebees in shade but everything I can find on how to grow comfrey says it needs good sun.
Can it cope with heavy shade?  What is the best way to grow it?
I have noticed that snowdrops in this area take 3 weeks longer to flower than in full sun, it is that shady.

I've got a comfrey patch in a shady patch and it grows just fine. Probably not as vigorous as it would be in full sun, but provides plenty enough each year for my plot/ compost heap :)

Thank you for that.
Did you grow it from seed or plant it as plants?  When after November can I plant it?

Mine came from some roots dug up from the local woodland adjacent to the allotment  ;) I noticed it wasn't spreading in the woods, so I guessed it wouldn't take over my plot!

A couple of years ago I moved my comfrey patch from a sunny spot to a relative shady area, and to be honest once they had established by the second year I can see no difference to the rate of growth.

Best to buy the strain called 'Bocking 14', which doesn't set viable seed, which is good news when growing it in your garden if you forget to chop it down before it flowers!

As such, it's usually sold as root cuttings, although you could probably find somewhere selling young plants.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Our comfrey was transplanted from 'The Patch' when we gave it up last year.

It's below a north-facing wall, and gets hardly any real sunshine, but has stormed away in its first year!

One thing which might have helped, is that it is directly over the drain to the soakaway from the septic tank, so it does two things - takes all the effluent, and grows huge plants and delightful flowers in the process!

If you do buy plants there is an easy way to increase your stock.  Just root leaves in a jar of water.

I started with a single plant which I found in the herb section of a garden centre of all places   Anyway I spotted the lilac/purple flowers, which are distinctive to this strain and bought the plant.  I now have several and they are growing in shade without too much effort  :)
