I have never managed anything but spindly spring onions from seed, but this year B&Q had some organic veg at sale prices and I bought a tray of spring onion plants. Transplanted them out in May and have harvested some really decent ones already with quite a lot more to come. Normally like to grow my own stuff from seed, but this may be the way forward for me with spring oinions.

His plot amazes me, Elder of our tribe,But as I say, if E' plants it it grows.
So was it a bad year for seeds last year-or the the weather this year?

Never have been able to grow spring onions, they just dont thicken up and get full of weeds! Best success I had was over winter in a raised bed in the greenhouse. Buy them from the shops now - its cheaper than the seeds!
There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of memory, the other two I forget.

Mine have germinated well, but in common with other seem a little slow this year. Must be the weather!

I think sometimes harvest times on the back of packets are a little optimistic, and they leave out that essential requirement - patience!

I will be harvesting soon, but in the meantime I'm using sliced winter onions in salads instead of resorting to Tesc*'s spring onions.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I grow mine in cells - 4 to 6 seeds per cell, plant them out about 6-8" apart (without thinning the cells) and they push each other aside. The little bunches make weeding easy.

This year I also tried a row direct into the ground and I'm having the same problems as stated here. (I know how i'm going to do my over wintered ones!)
If only we could teach the Slugs to only eat the Weeds, and then the Pigeons to only eat the Slugs!

This is my first year of growing anything.  Carrots doing well, potatoes not got long before I dig them up, toms are doing great.  Planted the same variety as everybody else (white lisbon) and nothing :(   Thought I had done something wrong, glad it is just not me.
