Howard 350 gear problem
« on: April 06, 2013, 23:38 »
I've acquired a Howard 350 and have a problem with the gear engaging. It makes a grinding noise.
I've looked inside the gearbox assembly and the gear teeth is worn, hence the grinding noise.

Question is - How do you replace the gear within the gearbox housing?

Has anyone come across this fault before and can offer some useful advice for repairing?

Need your expert advice!

Pictures below shows machine and close up of the sheared gear - little blur but you can see the problem hopefully.

I would try chester hudson at tillerparts.co.uk, if he's got one he will get it out and send it to you for a price, he has a good stock of parts, he can come across a bit funny but he knows his stuff and has the parts.

have you checked the clutch is working properly.these are notorious for trouble.if its not disengaging it will cause gear to grind.take off clutch housing ,undo screws(i think theres about 8 of them)there will be a cone with clutch lining and a spring ,the splines will need some lithium grease to work properly.if the gear box has had it there is one on ebay.

Had the clutch off as it was sticking - clutch is fine. Thanks Acer

Grendal - Been in touch with Chester and he has one for £70 so that's an option. The fiddly bit, if it comes to that, is to strip the gearbox assembly down and take the spindle out using a hydraulic press and then replace the gear.

Does that sound correct?

I'm not keen to dump this machine just because I can't replace this on my own.

yes he's not cheap, but if he says its the part it generally is, not sure of fitment as I dont have a howard myself - if you just need a hydraulic press it may be worth trying a small garage or motorbike repair shop who will give you a hand or do it for you - sometimes just for the price of a couple of bacon butties or a round of beers.

Well, we managed to adjust the gear rod and seemed to work ok , then, the gearbox seized.

Can you fix a seized gearbox on a Howard 350? Or is it scrap?

Another question for you experts... what's the difference between a Howard 300 and a 350. Is it the engine size?

Thanks Jezza, it appears that we can fit a Kohler engine of a 350 straight onto a 300 without problems.

Wonderful!

You will need to check if the clutch/ mounting will fit as Howard have different types to suit each engine make/type
