Green finger cucumbers
« on: June 16, 2009, 16:43 »
I've sown 4 cucumber seeds and they've popped up and said hello and now all have 2 or 3 leaves. I'm not entirely sure what I should do now? They've been sown in the greenhouse, do I move them outside? Keep them inside? Put them in pots or direct into the ground? I think I have to 'trail' them up something....don't really know what that means practically?

Any help??  :(

You can leave in greenhouse if you like depends on variety i expect, i have mine in our conservatory and funnily enough picked our first cucumber today and had it in our sandwiches on our picnic.

I have mine in a pot and have 3 canes making a tripod and at aprox 6 inch intervals have string going round all 3 like a triangle all the way up to the top.  The plants have climbed up, when they reached the top of the canes i pinched off the top to encourage more side growth and not so much height.

The plants  throw out tendrils but if they dont hang on very well tie them on with string which can be removed later if you want.

Even this variety is too heavy to worry about trussing up because they could just pull themselves off of the vines. You can leave them in the greenhouse until ready to use.

Cool, thanks for the 'tripod' idea. Could I put them into a growbag (say 3 in a bag like toms?) or would they be better in the ground in the greenhouse?
