Which sand or soil to use in brooder?
« on: April 19, 2013, 20:46 »
Hi all, my chicks will be 2 weeks tomorrow. 1 of them escaped the box today lol. Im using paper at the moment but they start playing and scratching and eating it lol. Im thinking if i should use sand or any soil or not? Would they eat that? I tried equine green which is similar to miscanthus they start pecking and eat the little bits.

you could use dust extracted shavings - if the pieces are quite large they wont be able to eat them.
Staffies are softer than you think.

They will probably eat sand or soil.  Try what joyfull suggested or I think Home Bargains sell puppy pads which will be stronger than tissue.

I'll give wood shavings a go see how they get on with them.

I have successfully used dust extracted wood shavings for chicks and ducklings and would use it again. If you buy a large bag it will be cheaper and you can use it in your coop for the older hens. Once they are with the big girls you can go back you using miscanthus if you want to - it is cheaper than shavings round here. However, shavings do have other benefits in that they have anti bacterial propertites and smell nice!! :)
