Sand on run floor? And lime to neutralise soil?
« on: June 15, 2009, 12:14 »
Hi all

I'm extending the run by around 50% to give the hens a bit more space when we have them locked in.

At the moment they have bark chips on the floor but in the new section I plan to have half grass with rocks and branches to climb and half as a sand bath.

Does it matter what type of sand I use?  And is there a recommended depth?

Another question - I'm replacing the bark chips as over a bit of time and lots of rain it's very smelly if you dig down a bit.  Before I lay new stuff on the soil I remember reading somewhere about putting lime down to reduce the acidity or something?  Where do I get the product needed assuming anyone knows?

Thank you :-)

D
